Earlier this month, the Canadian government sent shock-waves across the grocery industry when they announced plans for a sweeping nationwide ban on all single-use plastics in 2021.
There’s no debate that the rampant production of single-use plastics has done serious damage to our environment over the years. That is why at various levels of government in Canada and the United States, legislation has been coming through with the purpose of limiting and even eliminating the use of these plastic products.

It’s no secret that as a society, our usage of single-use plastics has run rampant to the point where we’re now in the middle of an environmental crisis. The abundance of plastic waste we produce each year is rising, with one of the biggest culprits being single-use plastic bags. These bags can take over 500 years to degrade in a landfill and they release toxic chemicals into our atmosphere as they do. Also, single-use plastic bags don’t always full degrade. Instead, they can often turn into micro plastics that further pollute the environment with their toxic output.
